Most couples we meet are worried about the same thing. Four days, seven functions, both families watching, and only one chance to get it right. Girija and Anirudh had all of that, plus a wedding planned mostly from San Diego. Here is how their Tamil Brahmin wedding at Gopinath Gardens, Injambakkam came together, and what we noticed while we were photographing it.

They met at a virtual matchmaking event run by a friend of Girija's. She had signed up years earlier to support the friend and barely used it. One email about an online session, no expectations, and she logged on for fun.

Out of everyone on that call, Girija and Anirudh were the only two from San Diego. They got talking about skydiving and worked out they had jumped at the same spot near Seattle. The call ended before they could say much more, but both of them told the service they were interested, and phone numbers were exchanged.

Anirudh puts it simply. They were the only two from the same city, and they thought it might work.

The first date that ran fourteen hours

Girija had just adopted her dog, Chili, two weeks before that first call, and she had talked about her a lot. When Anirudh picked her up for brunch, the first thing she saw in the car was a little toy he had brought for Chili.

They went to brunch, then to a farmer's market they had not planned to stop at, where he bought her flowers. Then Balboa Park, then the international market, then back to walk Chili together. Twelve or fourteen hours, Girija says, and it is still her favourite memory from that time.

Anirudh knew by the end of it. His reasoning is very him. In most relationships it takes months to get to the serious questions, but they had asked each other all of them on day one, and the answers came back so easily that it just felt correct.

The proposal at Horseshoe Bend

The ring was already bought before the trip. Girija had no idea.

They planned seven days across Arizona with a series of photo shoots along the way, since they wanted pictures from the trip up around their home. Grand Canyon was supposed to be the day. It rained out.

The next day they reached Horseshoe Bend, and Girija spotted a ledge she wanted a photo on. She climbed out first. Anirudh stayed back with the photographer, who had been carrying the ring the whole time, then followed her out. She was standing there taking in the canyon, saying wow, with no idea he was on one knee behind her. When she turned around, the rest of the tour group started cheering.

They had not told most of their friends and family they were even close. That photo is how everyone found out.

Bidal Mehendi

The Chennai celebrations opened small. A short Bidal Mehendi, close family only, barely half an hour at Voora Villa 96 on ECR.

We photograph a lot of these and they are easy to underrate. There is no stage, no schedule pressure, and no one is performing yet. It is usually the last quiet room before the week takes over, which is exactly why we never skip it.

Mehendi Ceremony

The full Mehendi ran most of an afternoon.

Mehendi is the function where a couple's people finally relax. The bride is seated for hours and cannot move her hands, so everyone comes to her. Cousins, aunts, school friends. If you want photographs of the people who actually raised you, this is the day they all show up and stay put.

Viratham – Seeking Divine Blessings

Viratham is where a Tamil Brahmin wedding properly begins. The groom takes a vow before entering married life, the families pray for the days ahead to go smoothly, and the kaappu or protective thread is tied. It is short, it is quiet, and it is almost entirely elders and priests.

Nichayathartham (Engagement)

The engagement followed the same day, covered the way families expect these ceremonies to be covered, so the frames the grandparents want exist alongside everything else.

This is the balance most couples ask us about. Candid coverage does not mean the traditional photographs get skipped. It means both are planned for from the start.

Sangeet

The Sangeet was a spectacular celebration of music, dance, and togetherness, bringing both families together for an evening of unforgettable entertainment.

Girija and Anirudh made a grand couple entry that set the stage for the festivities, followed by a beautifully choreographed dance performance that perfectly reflected their chemistry and joyful personalities.

Throughout the evening, friends and family lit up the stage with energetic performances, heartfelt tributes, and plenty of laughter, creating an atmosphere filled with love and celebration.

One of the most emotional moments of the night was a surprise slideshow lovingly curated by their closest family and friends, taking everyone on a nostalgic journey through their childhood memories, personal milestones, and the beautiful story that eventually brought Girija and Anirudh together. It was an evening that celebrated not just their wedding, but the incredible journey that led them to this moment.

Reception

The venue Gopinath Gardens was transformed into a breathtaking setting as Girija and Anirudh made a grand entry amidst sparkling pyrotechnics, dancing clouds of smoke, and a stunning display of lights that instantly set a magical tone for the evening.

Their romantic first dance beautifully captured the joy of beginning a new chapter together, while the cake-cutting ceremony became even more memorable with bursts of fireworks illuminating the celebration.

Throughout the evening, carefully choreographed pyrotechnic displays enhanced every major milestone, adding a cinematic touch to the festivities.

Heartfelt speeches from family and friends filled the air with laughter, emotions, and cherished memories, making the reception a perfect culmination of their wedding celebrations and a fitting tribute to the love shared by the couple and everyone who gathered to celebrate them.

A Love Story Built on Shared Values

While many couples speak about common interests, Girija and Anirudh discovered something deeper.

Both describe each other as intellectual companions.

Girija fondly recalls that they were both searching for someone who could challenge them intellectually—someone with whom conversations could effortlessly move from philosophy and books to travel and family.

Anirudh echoes the same feeling.

Their first date lasted nearly 14 hours, covering brunch, spontaneous visits to a farmer's market, Balboa Park, flowers, long conversations, and even meeting Girija's beloved dog, Chili. By the end of that day, they had already discussed the important questions that most couples take months to ask.

For both of them, the answer felt obvious.

They had found their person.

A Proposal Among Nature's Greatest Wonders

Knowing Girija loved photography, hiking and national parks, Anirudh planned a week-long road trip across Arizona.

His original plan was to propose at the Grand Canyon, but rain had other plans.

The following day at the breathtaking Horseshoe Bend, Girija walked ahead to admire the spectacular view while Anirudh quietly collected the engagement ring from their photographer.

When she finally turned around, he was already on one knee.

Surrounded by cheering strangers, magnificent canyon views and endless skies, they began the next chapter of their lives exactly where they belonged—in the middle of another adventure.

The Sacred Tamil Brahmin Wedding Rituals

A traditional Tamil Brahmin wedding beautifully balances spirituality with celebration.

Kashi Yatra

In this symbolic ritual, the groom declares his intention to renounce worldly life and pursue spiritual knowledge. The bride's father lovingly persuades him to return and accept family life, highlighting the importance of marriage in Hindu tradition.

Maalai Maatral

The bride and groom exchange floral garlands three times, symbolising mutual acceptance, equality and the joyful beginning of their partnership.

Oonjal Ceremony

The couple sits together on a beautifully decorated swing while family members sing traditional songs and bless them. The gentle movement of the swing represents the ups and downs of married life, reminding the couple to support one another through every phase.

Kanyadaanam

One of the most emotional moments of the ceremony, where the bride's parents lovingly entrust their daughter to the groom, blessing the couple for a lifetime of happiness.

Mangalya Dharanam

As Anirudh tied the sacred Mangalsutra around Girija's neck amidst Vedic chants and the sounds of the Nadaswaram, two lives officially became one.

Sapthapadi

The seven sacred steps represent seven promises that the couple makes to one another—covering friendship, trust, prosperity, family, strength, love and lifelong companionship.

Nalangu

After the solemnity of the wedding comes Nalangu—a playful ceremony where the newlyweds participate in fun traditional games. Beyond the laughter, the ritual helps ease them into married life while strengthening the bond between both families.

What we would tell a couple planning something similar

Three things, based on this particular week.

Decide early which functions need candid coverage and which need traditional coverage, because they are different jobs and most families want both. Girija and Anirudh's week had both running side by side on the bigger days, and that is why the album has the hugging and the formal frames.

If your family is spread across countries, plan the live stream at the same time you plan the photography, not the week before. It is a separate thing to get right and it does not work as an afterthought.

And do not leave the smallest function uncovered. That half hour Bidal Mehendi with eight people in the room usually gives us photographs the four hour function cannot.
