Malayali and Konkani wedding photography
Two different traditions, grouped here because we've shot both away from Chennai, travelling for the wedding rather than working from a fixed base. If you're planning either of these, here's what we've actually covered.
Malayali weddings
We've photographed a Malayali wedding at the Vijaya International Convention Centre in Thiruvalla, Kerala, a temple ceremony followed by a reception at the convention centre.
The central ritual is the Thali Kettu, where the groom ties the thali around the bride's neck, usually a quieter and more contained moment than the equivalent in a Tamil wedding, and one that rewards being close rather than working from a distance. The Sadhya afterward, the full feast served on banana leaves, is worth covering properly too, since it's as much a part of the day as the ceremony itself.
Konkani weddings
We've covered Konkani weddings in Mumbai, including one with the ceremony at a banquet hall in Powai and the reception at the Grand Hyatt.
The structure runs close to what you'd see in many Indian weddings, a Mehendi evening, a Sangeet night, then the wedding itself with the thali tied, garlands exchanged, and vows taken around a sacred fire. What we've learned covering it is less about a single unusual ritual and more about pacing a day that moves between an intimate ceremony and a large-scale reception without either one feeling rushed.
